CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The bar was jumping. Evie couldn't remember a time when it had ever been this busy. The call had come in just before eight and her father had looked unhappy as he passed the message on. She was needed at work. It wasn't a request. It was an order.

He had also informed her that he was going to go with her, so she needn't get any smart ideas.

In some ways, it was a blessing. She had been dreading Friday night rolling around because despite what Sebastian Munsec had said about her, she hadn't learnt her lesson at all. Part of her was aching to get back to the club, to take the chance and see if Carmen was there. Just to see her again. To have her lies bring her to her knees.

The rational part of her, of course, knew that was tantamount to signing her own death warrant. She wasn't that stupid. Besides, in this fantasy world, her father let her out of the house. In reality, she was under lock and key. The bar was the only place he would even consider letting her leave her room to go to. So instead of dreaming of things that couldn't be, she had put on her makeup, laying it on a little thicker than usual, knowing that it still didn't cover the dark shadowing that lingered on her cheek and along her jaw. It might have been nearly two weeks, but the delicate skin of her face was slow to heal.

Now she was pulling pints while Nathan had a nervous breakdown in the backroom. He hadn't had a break since before lunch and the poor boy wasn't used to actually working hard. Much to her father's annoyance, it was already starting to calm down by the time they got there, but it was still full of enough new faces to give the place more of a buzz than usual. He was scowling into his pint at the end of the bar, unwilling to let her out of his sight. Evie had hoped that once he started to have a drink he might calm down a bit, maybe even begin to show a little bit more humanity towards her. Instead he was taking it slow, his glass only half empty. That was just a pain in the ass.

'Hey trouble,' a warm familiar face smiled at her from the opposite end of the bar to where her father sat.

'Hey Jimmy, long time no see,' Evie walked up to him, giving him a punch on the shoulder by way of greeting. He was the first friendly face she'd seen in what felt like forever. 'The usual?'

'Please.' He reached into his pocket and pulled out a twenty. Evie raised an eyebrow at him and he grinned. 'It's legit. Especially for you.'

'Good. I don't need any trouble.'

'I can see.' His voice was low and she barely heard him. Evie looked up to see him looking at the bruises on her face. His eyes moved away, disinterested.
